Taylor's V-Class Bracing has revolutionized the sound and tonal potential of acoustic guitars. Andy Powers, Taylor's Master Builder, realized that a completely new body shape could take this even further. The Grand Pacific is a modern and elegant reinterpretation of the traditional dreadnought, with soft curves and a timeless aesthetic that belies a fundamental shift in sonic character.
For Andy, it was important to address the inherent shortcomings that older dreadnought guitars often suffered from. The result is a warm, enveloping sound with notes that flow together in a way reminiscent of the resonance of a piano or the ripples in water when thrown from a stone. The Grand Pacific offers a mature and balanced tonal response, effectively eliminating the “boxy” and “honky” sound. This provides a more intimate soundscape when recording, while delivering a controlled and powerful bass. Taylor also continues to prioritize high playability, build quality and comfort in this model.
Lutz spruce lies tonally between European spruce and the more traditional Sitka spruce, offering a combination of strength and stiffness that allows for an exceptionally high volume ceiling. This makes Lutz an excellent choice for players who want to be heard in all situations. The wood delivers great projection, a wide tonal range, and a clarity that really comes into its own, especially for playing styles that require fast attack and precision. Originally from the Pacific region between Alaska and British Columbia, Lutz is a highly versatile tonewood that produces a rich and vibrant sound, appealing to all types of musicians.
Ovangkol is an African wood closely related to rosewood and shares many of its tonal characteristics, such as a wide range from deep bass to clear treble. The difference lies in a slightly fuller midrange and a brighter treble, reminiscent of the warm tone of koa wood. This creates a distinct and rich soundscape with a balanced character.
How the guitar's soundboard (top) vibrates and moves is largely dependent on the design and placement of the bracing, and this is crucial to the overall sound of any acoustic guitar. Traditionally, there has been a trade-off between volume (which benefits from less bracing) and sustain (which requires more bracing), as well as the question of whether the top should be rigid or flexible.
Taylor now breaks these conventions with its revolutionary V-Class Bracing, which manages to combine both increased volume and improved sustain – something that has previously been difficult to reconcile. This innovative system also improves intonation along the entire fretboard, creating an even tonal balance across the entire frequency spectrum with powerful projection.
By encouraging a more natural response from the soundboard, the top vibrates in a way that supports the development of individual notes and their interplay, minimizing conflicts between volume and sustain. The result is a richer and more dynamic soundscape, where both chords and melodies gain greater depth and timbre. V-Class Bracing is thus a true combination of the best of both worlds.
